The Holden Eagles had their best team district finish since 2013 by finishing 3rd as a team at the class 1 district 2 tournament. They finished only 2.5 points out of second place to Fatima.
Leading the way for the Eagles was senior Daylen Greene (39-2) at the 120lb bracket. Greene earned the third district championship of his career with a 6-2 decision over Drake Schmidt of Versailles in the finals. Greene becomes the sixth Eagle in program history to qualify for state all four years.
While winning districts, Greene also climbed to the top of the program’s career win list with his 170th win. Greene surpasses Andrew Martin (2014-18) to top the list. Greene will look to add to his career achievements with his fourth trip to the state tournament next week. A medal would make Greene the only four-time state medalist in Eagle wrestling history.
Junior Trent Stout (34-8) finished runner-up in the 157lb weight class to earn his first state qualification. Stout dropped a tight 5-2 decision to Drake Murrell of Warsaw in the finals.
Fellow Junior Aiden Christian (36-7) also qualified for state by finishing 3rd in the 285lb weight class. Christian becomes a two-time state qualifier with his pin over Alexis Anguiano of California in the 3rd place match.
Senior CJ Reifsteck (13-8) qualified for the state tournament with a 4th-place finish in the 175lb bracket. Reifsteck earns the second qualification of his high school career with the finish.
Senior Andrew Johnston (19-12) became the 5th Eagle to punch his ticket to state with a 4th place finish in the 215lb weight class. Johnston fell to Brayden Clement from Diamond in the 3rd place match but still earned his first state qualification.
Juniors Graysen Thieman and Conner Carver also had good runs in the district tournament falling one win short of state qualification. Both contributed to team points with their multiple wins in the tournament.
The MSHSAA Class 1 State Tournament will kick off Wednesday, February 21st and will conclude Thursday, February 22nd.
